Why Owning and Controlling Your Business Domain Name is Key

Domain Name

Hello, fellow small-business owners! Let’s chat about something that might not be the first thing on your mind, but it’s very important – your business’s domain name. I know you’ve got a lot on your plate, but trust me, understanding the value of your domain name is worth your time.

Why Your Domain Name Is a Big Deal

Your domain name is like your online street address. It’s how customers find you in the vast world of the internet. It’s a part of your brand’s identity, just like your logo or your storefront. And just like your physical business location, you wouldn’t want someone else owning the land it sits on, right? The same goes for your domain name.

Keep It Under Your Hat

Owning and controlling your domain name gives you power. You decide where it points, what email addresses are associated with it and, ultimately, how your brand is perceived online. If you hand over control to someone else, you’re basically giving them the keys to your online castle. This is not a good idea!

Imagine if you needed to change your website host or wanted to revamp your site, but you couldn’t because someone else controlled your domain. That’s like needing permission to repaint your own store!

The Perils of Losing Control

Losing control of your domain can lead to all sorts of headaches. Worst-case scenario? The person holding your domain could hold it hostage, demanding high fees to give it back to you. Or they could let it expire, and someone else could snap it up. Imagine having to change all your business cards, signs and marketing materials because you lost your domain name. It’s a hassle you don’t need.

How to Safeguard Your Domain

So, how do you make sure you stay in control? First, register the domain yourself. Use a reputable registrar and keep your registration info up to date. Make sure to set your domain to auto-renew, so you don’t accidentally lose it because you forgot to renew.

Be wary of anyone who offers to handle your domain for you, especially if they want ownership transferred to them. It’s fine to have someone manage your website, but your domain should always be in your name.

A Note on DNS and Agency Access

Your webmaster or host may ask you for something called “agency access” (or similar) or ask to have access to your DNS settings. This is safe to do and very normal in the digital world. If you maintain sole ownership and administrator rights, you hold the keys to the castle and can revoke their access at any time. Your agency will not have any ability to change admin settings, add other users or change billing. They will simply have access to your domain’s DNS, which is necessary in most cases.

The Bottom Line

Your domain name is a valuable asset. It’s an integral part of your online presence and brand identity. Keeping control of it ensures that you have the freedom to manage your online business as you see fit. It’s one of those things that might not seem like a big deal until it’s gone, so take steps to protect it now.

So remember: Your domain name is more than just an address – it’s a piece of your business’s identity. Keep it safe and keep it yours.
